Teaching Identifying Fractions

What it is

Identifying fractions is naming the fraction shown by a shaded shape, a set of objects, or a point on a number line. The whole may be one shape or a group, so three of nine marbles is 3/9.

When a child is ready

Begin once equal parts can be counted and halves, thirds, and fourths are known.

If they struggle

On a number line children count the marks instead of the spaces. Have them count the gaps from 0 to 1 for the bottom number, then the gaps from 0 to the point for the top. With a set of objects, circle the whole group first so the bottom number is read off the circle rather than guessed.
