Teaching Venn Diagrams

What it is

A Venn diagram sorts things into two overlapping circles: items with one property on the left, items with the other on the right, and items with both in the overlap. Anything with neither stays outside both circles.

When a child is ready

Begin once the child can sort a set by one rule and explain that rule.

If they struggle

The overlap is the sticking point. Sort real objects into three physical piles first, only this, only that, and both, then move the piles into the drawn circles. Ask of every single item, is it both, before deciding where it goes, because a child who only asks is it this will never fill the middle.
