Teaching Tally and Frequency
What it is
Tally marks record a count as it happens, four upright marks with the fifth laid across them, and a frequency table turns those marks into numbers. The child counts by fives and then by ones to read each total.
When a child is ready
Begin once skip counting by five is easy and the child knows the fifth mark goes across the other four.
If they struggle
If totals are off, watch how a group is counted: it should go five, ten, then ones, not one mark at a time. Tallying something real that will not wait, cars going past or birds at a feeder, teaches the fifth-mark habit faster than a page of marks does, because there is no time to count from the start again.
