Teaching 2D and 3D Shapes

What it is

This puts flat shapes and solids side by side: a square is a face of a cube, a circle is the face of a cylinder. Children count faces, edges, and vertices and match a solid to the flat shapes it is built from.

When a child is ready

Begin once flat shapes are named confidently and the child can hold a solid and point to one face.

If they struggle

Use real boxes and cans rather than pictures, since a drawing of a cube hides three of its six faces. Have the child trace around each face onto paper to see which flat shapes the solid is made of, and stick a small label on each face while counting so none is counted twice and none is forgotten underneath.
