Teaching Make a Ten
What it is
A guided lesson on adding across ten. The second number is split so that part of it fills the ten and the rest is added on: 9 + 6 becomes 10 + 5.
When a child is ready
Ready once the pairs that make 10 are known without counting.
If they struggle
Ask first how many the first number needs to reach 10. That many come out of the second number, and what is left is added to 10.
