Teaching Sentences
What it is
These pages work on what a sentence is made of: hearing that it is built from separate words, counting those words, and drawing what the sentence says. Counting words is harder than it sounds for a child who hears speech as one continuous stream.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child speaks in full sentences and can clap the syllables in a word.
If they struggle
Say a short sentence slowly and put down one counter for each word as you say it. Then say it again and let the child move the counters. If the drawing does not match the sentence, read it back one word at a time and ask what is missing from the picture.
