Teaching Capitalization and Punctuation
What it is
Capital letters mark the start of a sentence and every name: a person, a place, a day, a month. End marks tell the reader how the sentence closes, a period for telling, a question mark for asking, an exclamation point for strong feeling.
When a child is ready
Teach it as soon as the child writes sentences, even one sentence at a time.
If they struggle
Check the same three things after every sentence the child writes: capital at the front, spaces between words, mark at the end. If capitals turn up in the middle of words, the trouble is letter formation rather than the rule, so practice the lowercase letters. Reading the sentence aloud shows which end mark belongs.
