Teaching Story Elements
What it is
Story elements are the parts every story has: the characters, meaning who it is about, and the setting, meaning where and when it happens. These sheets ask the child to name them and draw them.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child listens to a story and can tell you who was in it.
If they struggle
Ask the same two questions of every book you read together, not only on the worksheet: who is this about, and where are they? When the setting is missed, look at the picture and name what is behind the characters, indoors or outdoors, day or night, before anything is written.
