Teaching Cause and Effect
What it is
Cause and effect is noticing that one thing made another happen: the cup tipped, so the milk spilled. These pages ask the child to match what happened to why it happened.
When a child is ready
Begin as soon as the child can answer a why question about a story or about something that happened at home.
If they struggle
Use real events before printed ones: your boots are muddy, why? In a passage, put a finger on what happened first, then read on for the so. The words so, because, and then mark the join, and are worth pointing out every time they appear.
