Teaching Details and Inference
What it is
Details are what the story actually says. An inference is what the reader works out without being told: if the page says the boy shook out his umbrella, the child can say that it was raining. Several of these pages also ask the child to connect the story to something in their own life.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child listens to a short story and can retell one or two things that happened in it.
If they struggle
Ask for the clue and not just the answer: how do you know? If an answer comes from nowhere, reread the sentence and have the child point to the words that gave the hint. Linking the story to something the child has done makes the missing piece much easier to supply.
