Teaching Predictions
What it is
A prediction is a sensible guess about what happens next, made from what has been read so far and from the picture. It is not a wish, and it is settled by reading on.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child can tell you what has happened in the story up to this point.
If they struggle
Stop at a natural break, ask what might happen next and why, then read on and ask whether it turned out that way. The checking matters more than the guessing. If the guesses are wild, go back to the picture and the last sentence and hold the child to what is actually on the page.
