Teaching Short Passages
What it is
A short passage is two or three sentences with a question or two attached, small enough to finish in one sitting. The whole point is to answer from the text rather than from memory or a good guess.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child reads a sentence smoothly enough to still remember its beginning when reaching its end.
If they struggle
Have the child point to, or underline, the words that answer the question before saying the answer out loud. If answers keep arriving from nowhere, cover the question, reread the passage together, then uncover it and try again.
