Teaching Reading Passages
What it is
These are short illustrated stories with questions after them: a few sentences a child can read alone, followed by who it was about, what happened, and where. It is the step from reading words to reading a story.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child reads short sentences with the common sight words already in place.
If they struggle
Read the questions before reading the passage so the child knows what to watch for. If the decoding takes all the effort, read the passage aloud first and let the child reread it; understanding rarely survives a hard first read, and the second read is where it appears.
