Teaching Silent Letters: sc
What it is
When sc comes before e, i, or y, the c goes quiet and only the s is heard: scene, scent, science, ascend, obscene. Before any other letter both sounds stay, as in scare, screen, escape, and discuss.
When a child is ready
Teach it after soft c, since it is the same three letters, e, i, and y, that make the c go soft.
If they struggle
Have the child look at the letter after sc before reading anything: e, i, or y means say /s/ alone. Reading pairs side by side makes it visible, scene and scare, science and scout, ascend and escape, and works faster than repeating the rule. Muscle holds a silent c for a different reason and is learned on its own.
