Teaching Silent Letters: mn
What it is
When mn falls at the end of a word, the n is silent: autumn, column, hymn, solemn, condemn. In gymnast, amnesty, and remnant the mn sits inside the word and both letters are heard.
When a child is ready
Teach it alongside or just after silent b in mb, since the position idea is the same: the letter falls quiet at the end of the word.
If they struggle
Have the child point to where the mn sits before reading. At the end, say only the m; in the middle, say both. For spelling, the n comes back in the longer relative, column and columnist, condemn and condemnation, hymn and hymnal, which is the most reliable way to remember to write it.
