Teaching Metric Measurement
What it is
The metric system builds every unit from the meter, gram, and liter using the same prefixes: kilo is a thousand, centi is a hundredth, milli is a thousandth. Converting means moving the decimal point by the right number of places.
When a child is ready
Begin once decimal place value is secure and multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, and 1,000 is automatic.
If they struggle
Write the ladder of units down the side of the page, km, m, cm, mm, and count the steps between the two units; each step moves the point one place, in the direction of the step. Then check by sense: an adult is about 1.7 meters, so 170 cm is right and 17 cm is not.
