Teaching Mass and Weight

What it is

At this level mass and weight are worked in grams, kilograms, ounces, pounds, and tons, with conversion, addition, and word problems where the units must be matched before anything is computed.

When a child is ready

Begin once decimal computation is fluent and conversion within one system is understood.

If they struggle

Mixed units are where the errors live. For 3 lb 5 oz minus 1 lb 9 oz, trade one pound for 16 ounces and rewrite it as 2 lb 21 oz before subtracting, the same move as regrouping a ten. Metric needs no trade at all, only a decimal point moved, so have the child say which system the problem is in before the first line is written.
