Teaching Money Word Problems
What it is
Money word problems involve buying, making change, splitting a cost, and comparing prices, with amounts in dollars and cents. They are decimal problems in everyday clothes.
When a child is ready
Begin once decimals to hundredths are added and subtracted accurately and change can be counted.
If they struggle
Write every amount with a dollar sign and two decimal places before starting, so $5 and $0.50 cannot be confused. For change, count up from the price to the amount handed over rather than subtracting. Then read the answer for sense: change larger than the money paid means an operation was reversed.
