Teaching Measurement Word Problems

What it is

These are stories that need measurement facts: adding lengths of fencing, working out how much juice is left, converting before comparing two amounts. The units usually have to be made the same before any arithmetic happens.

When a child is ready

Begin once unit conversions are secure and one-step word problems are handled confidently.

If they struggle

Have the child underline every measurement in the story with its unit, and write beside it what the story does to them, joins, removes, or compares. Convert to one unit only after that decision, since a child who converts first often loses track of what the numbers were for. An answer that lands wildly large or small is nearly always a conversion done the wrong way round.
