Teaching Measurement Activities
What it is
These are hands-on measuring tasks rather than computation: measuring rooms and objects, recording the results in a table, and then comparing or ordering them. Reading the tool and recording the result are both part of the work.
When a child is ready
Begin once a ruler, tape measure, or scale can be used independently and results are written with their units.
If they struggle
Require every recorded number to carry its unit, because a table of bare numbers cannot be compared afterwards and the measuring has to be done again. If two results look inconsistent, measure the same object twice and talk about why the readings differ, the tape sagging or the object shifting, rather than picking whichever number looks nicer.
