Teaching Equivalent and Simplified Fractions
What it is
Equivalent fractions are different names for the same amount, so 2/3 equals 4/6 equals 8/12. Simplifying works the other way, dividing top and bottom by the same number until no common factor is left, so 12/16 becomes 3/4.
When a child is ready
Begin once multiplication and division facts are fluent and equivalence has been seen in pictures or folded strips.
If they struggle
If only one of the two numbers gets divided, state the rule as a single action: whatever is done below the line is done above it, in the same breath. When simplifying stalls, divide by 2 as many times as it will go, then try 3 and then 5, rather than hunting for the greatest common factor first.
