Teaching Weight and Mass
What it is
Weight and mass are measured in ounces and pounds or grams and kilograms, read from a scale and converted within one system. Children estimate before weighing and compare two objects by number rather than by feel.
When a child is ready
Begin once the marks on a scale can be read and the child knows roughly what a pound and a kilogram feel like.
If they struggle
Write the estimate before every weighing, since a reading with no guess beside it teaches nothing. If conversions go wrong, weigh a one-pound bag of sugar in ounces on a kitchen scale so 16 is a number the child has watched appear rather than memorized. Sixteen is the number to hold for ounces and pounds; a thousand is the number for grams and kilograms.
