Teaching Temperature

What it is

Temperature work is reading a thermometer in degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius, including the unlabeled marks between numbers, and comparing two readings or finding how far the temperature rose or fell.

When a child is ready

Begin once a vertical number line can be read and the child counts by twos and fives.

If they struggle

Check which way the child is counting, because a thermometer's numbers rise upward and a child who counts down from the top reads a warm day as a cold one. For how much did it rise, put a finger at each reading and count up the marks between them instead of subtracting the two numbers straight away. Reading the outdoor thermometer every morning for a week gives freezing, a comfortable room, and a hot day real values.
