Teaching Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions

What it is

Converting between the two ways of writing an amount greater than one: seven quarters written as 7/4, or as one whole and three quarters, 1 3/4. Both name the same amount.

When a child is ready

Ready once a fraction is read as a number of equal parts and a child can say how many quarters make one whole.

If they struggle

If the conversion is done by a half-remembered rule, go back to the picture: draw two circles in quarters, shade seven of them, and count the wholes and the leftovers. Say the division out loud — seven quarters is seven divided into groups of four, one whole with three left — before writing the rule down again.
