Teaching Weight
What it is
Weight is how heavy an object is, judged first by holding two things and then measured in ounces, pounds, or grams on a scale. Children also put several objects in order from lightest to heaviest.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child can hold two objects and say which one is heavier.
If they struggle
Size fools children: a big bag of cotton balls looks heavier than a small stone and is not. Let a kitchen scale contradict the guess rather than arguing about it. Weigh familiar things, an apple, a shoe, a full water bottle, so that ounces and pounds are attached to something the child has lifted before the page is worked.
