Teaching Capacity
What it is
Capacity is how much a container holds, measured in cups, pints, quarts, or liters. Children compare containers, estimate what each will hold, then fill and count to check.
When a child is ready
Begin once units can be counted accurately and two numbers compared.
If they struggle
Tall and thin looks like more than short and wide and usually is not, so settle it at the sink: fill one container and pour it into the other. Keep a cup, a pint, and a quart on the counter and fill them for a week before any conversion problems are attempted, because the numbers mean nothing until the containers are familiar.
