Teaching Estimating Measurements
What it is
Estimating means giving a sensible answer before measuring: about how many paper clips long the book is, roughly how many cups the pitcher holds. The child then measures and compares the estimate with the result.
When a child is ready
Begin only after measuring with a unit is accurate, since an estimate is a judgment about a unit the child already knows.
If they struggle
Give the child something to measure against instead of guessing from nothing: a thumb width is about an inch, a large step about a yard. Write the estimate down before measuring and leave it there; erasing it afterwards to match the answer teaches nothing about how close the guess was.
