Teaching Counting Money

What it is

Counting money means naming coins and their values and adding a mix of coins, usually starting with the largest coin and counting on.

When a child is ready

Teach it after skip counting by 5s, 10s, and 25s, since coin counting depends on it.

If they struggle

Sort coins by value first, then count from the largest. Use real coins whenever possible; pictures are harder for many children than the coins themselves.
