Teaching Reading and Writing Fractions

What it is

Reading and writing fractions matches the picture to the notation: three of four equal parts shaded is written 3/4 and read three fourths. The bottom number says how many equal parts the whole was cut into, and the top says how many are counted.

When a child is ready

Begin once the child can shade a given number of equal parts and count them accurately.

If they struggle

A shape in four parts with three shaded is often written 3/1, because the child counts the shaded parts against the unshaded ones. Have the child count every part in the shape, shaded or not, and say that total out loud before the pencil moves. Then read the finished fraction in words, three fourths, so the bottom number keeps its name.
