Teaching Halves, Thirds, and Quarters

What it is

This is the naming of the first three fraction families: one half is one of two equal parts, one third is one of three, one quarter is one of four. Children shade parts of shapes and share sets of objects fairly.

When a child is ready

Begin once the child can fold or cut something into matching parts and can say when the parts are not equal.

If they struggle

Fold three paper strips of the same length into halves, thirds, and quarters and lay them side by side. Children are surprised that a quarter is smaller than a third, and that is the lesson. When a bigger bottom number is taken to mean a bigger piece, put the strips back on the table before anything else is written.
