Teaching Reading Scales and Instruments

What it is

This is reading the marks on a measuring tool, a ruler, a kitchen scale, a thermometer, or a measuring jug, including the unlabeled marks between the numbers. The child has to work out what one small mark is worth.

When a child is ready

Begin once the child counts by twos, fives, and tens and can read a number line.

If they struggle

Count the spaces between two labeled numbers, not the marks themselves, and divide: five spaces between 0 and 10 means each mark is worth 2. Have the child write that value at the top of the sheet before reading a single measurement, and work it out again whenever a different tool appears on the page.
