Teaching Length
What it is
Length work here is measuring with a ruler in inches and centimeters, drawing a line of a given length, and comparing or adding two lengths. Grade 4 sheets extend to feet, yards, and meters and to finding the difference between two.
When a child is ready
Begin once whole inches are measured accurately and the child can tell the inch edge of the ruler from the centimeter edge.
If they struggle
When an object ends between two numbers, the child needs the small marks: count how many spaces there are between two inch numbers, then read the halves and quarters from them. To draw a line of a given length, mark the start and the end as two dots first and join them afterwards, since drawing while watching the ruler numbers is what makes the line run long.
