Teaching Sentence Writing

What it is

A complete sentence names something and tells what it does or is, begins with a capital letter, and ends with a period, question mark, or exclamation point. In Grade 1 there are three pages a week all year: one on the week's story, one on a question such as What do you thank God for?, and one on the week's sound, each with a drawing and a sentence starter.

When a child is ready

Begin after the child can copy words and write a few sight words from memory.

If they struggle

Say the sentence first, count the words on fingers, then write. Check the three things every time: capital, spaces, end mark. Copywork of good sentences builds the habit before independent writing.
