Teaching One-Digit Subtraction from 20
What it is
This is taking a single-digit number away from a number up to twenty: 15 minus 4, 18 minus 6. Nothing is borrowed or regrouped, so the answer can be reached by counting back.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child counts backwards from twenty and understands subtraction as taking away from a group.
If they struggle
Count back on a number line or hundred chart, one hop per unit, with a finger held on the starting number. If the counting back gets lost, build the larger number with counters and physically remove the smaller group instead. Let the child say the answer before writing it.
