Teaching Adding with Pictures and Objects
What it is
This is addition done by seeing: two groups of pictures on the page, counted together to find how many altogether, with totals up to twenty. The number sentence is written after the picture has been counted, not before.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child counts a group accurately and can say how many are in each of two groups without recounting.
If they struggle
Use real objects, buttons or blocks or beans, and physically push the two groups together before counting. If the child recounts the first group every time, cover it, say its number aloud, and count on from there. With the larger totals, count on from the bigger group rather than from the one printed first.
