Teaching Prefixes in-, im- (not)
What it is
The prefixes in- and im- mean not: incorrect is not correct, incomplete is not complete, invisible is not able to be seen, impossible is not possible, imperfect is not perfect. Im- is the same prefix, respelled before b, m and p because it is easier to say.
When a child is ready
Teach it after un- and dis-, the first prefixes that mean not.
If they struggle
In- does not always mean not: inside, include and inspect use a different in- that means in or into. Test each word by putting not in front of the base: not correct works, not side does not. For spelling, check the next letter: b, m or p takes im-.
