Teaching Prefixes un-, re-, pre-, dis-

What it is

A prefix is a word part added to the front of a base word that changes its meaning. Un- means not (unfair, unsafe, unhappy) and re- means again or back (redo, refill, return); these two carry most of the practice in Grade 2. Dis- means not or the opposite of (dislike, disagree), and pre- means before.

When a child is ready

Teach prefixes once the child reads the base words (fair, fill, like) without help.

If they struggle

A child may read the whole word without noticing that the prefix changed the meaning. Cover the prefix, read the base, then uncover and say what the word means now: to unlock is to do the opposite of lock. Watch for look-alikes such as uncle and reach, where the letters are not a prefix at all.
