Teaching When Ones Make a Ten

What it is

Making a ten to add: ten-frames show how many more reach the next ten, six two-digit sums are worked in a tens and ones chart, and a story problem ends the page.

When a child is ready

Ready once the child adds to the next ten without counting, as in 75 and 5 more.

If they struggle

For a sum such as 39 + 43, move one from the 43 to make 40, then add 40 and 42. If that is too quick, go back to the chart and trade ten ones for a ten.
