Teaching Understanding Multiplication

What it is

Multiplication is repeated addition of equal groups: 3 × 4 means three groups of four, or 4 + 4 + 4.

When a child is ready

Begin after skip counting and addition are secure and the child can make equal groups with objects.

If they struggle

Build arrays with counters (rows of equal size) and write the multiplication sentence underneath. Move from objects to drawings to numerals, in that order.
