Teaching Equal Groups

What it is

A guided lesson that turns equal groups into multiplication: make the groups, line them up in rows, add them, say the same thing with a times sign, and then turn it around.

When a child is ready

Start once the child adds the same number several times, such as 5 + 5 + 5.

If they struggle

Build the groups with real objects and say groups of each time: three groups of four. The times sign is only a short way of writing those words.
