Teaching Telling Time

What it is

Telling time on an analog clock means reading the hour hand and the minute hand together: first to the hour and half hour, then to five minutes, then to the minute.

When a child is ready

Begin hour and half-hour once the child counts to 60 and can skip count by fives.

If they struggle

Use a clock with movable hands and teach the hands one at a time. The short hour hand is read first; the minute hand is read by counting fives around the face. Connect times to the child's own day.
