Teaching Polygons and Classifying Shapes
What it is
A polygon is a closed figure made only of straight sides. Classifying sorts them by the number of sides, triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, octagon, and notices whether the sides and angles are equal.
When a child is ready
Begin once sides are counted reliably and the child knows what a right angle is.
If they struggle
Ask first whether the figure is a polygon at all: closed all the way round, straight sides, no curves. A figure with one curved side or an open gap belongs in neither group, and children usually try to name it anyway. For the names themselves, tie the count to the word: five sides, pentagon; six, hexagon; eight, octagon.
