Teaching Multi-Digit Multiplication
What it is
Multi-digit multiplication is multiplying a larger number by a single digit in columns, such as 34 × 6 or 248 × 7. Each digit is multiplied in turn and the tens carried from one column are added into the next.
When a child is ready
The child needs quick single-digit multiplication facts and confident addition with regrouping before the column method is introduced.
If they struggle
Break the number apart first: 34 × 6 is 30 × 6 plus 4 × 6. Writing those two partial products and adding them shows what the small carried digits actually stand for, and the shortened column form makes sense afterward. Squared paper keeps the columns from drifting.
