Teaching Break Apart a Ten
What it is
A guided lesson on three-digit subtraction, including borrowing across a zero. The work is set out in a hundreds, tens and ones chart and checked by adding back.
When a child is ready
Ready once two-digit borrowing is secure.
If they struggle
When the tens place holds a zero there is nothing to borrow from, so go one place further left first: a hundred becomes ten tens, and one of those tens becomes ten ones.
