Teaching Break Apart a Ten

What it is

A guided lesson on two-digit subtraction when there are not enough ones. One ten is broken into ten ones in a tens and ones chart, and every answer is checked by adding back.

When a child is ready

Ready once two-digit subtraction without borrowing is easy and the child knows a ten is ten ones.

If they struggle

Ask the page's own question each time: do I have enough ones? If not, borrow from the neighbor: one fewer ten, ten more ones, and then subtract.
