Teaching Summer Multiplication

What it is

A summer review of the year's written multiplication - facts through multi-digit work, depending on the grade - on bright seasonal pages, each sheet backed by a worked answer key at the end of the set. In Grade 1: a first, gentle look: small groups of 1 to 5, products never past 20. This is meeting multiplication, not drilling it.

When a child is ready

Ready once the child adds the same small number several times.

If they struggle

Draw the groups: for 3 x 4, three circles with four dots in each, and count them all.

This skill in other grades: Grade 2 · Grade 3 · Grade 4 · Grade 5
