Teaching Measuring Length
What it is
Measuring length means comparing objects and then measuring them with units, first with paper clips or cubes and then with a ruler in inches and centimeters.
When a child is ready
Begin with comparing (longer, shorter) and nonstandard units before rulers.
If they struggle
The common error is starting at 1 instead of 0 on the ruler. Show the zero end, line it up, and read the number at the other end. Measure real objects around the house.
