Teaching Parts of Speech
What it is
Parts of speech are the jobs words do in a sentence: nouns name, verbs show action or being, adjectives describe nouns, adverbs describe verbs.
When a child is ready
Teach one part at a time, beginning with nouns and verbs, once the child writes complete sentences.
If they struggle
Ask the job question for each word: does it name something? show an action? describe? Color-coding words by job in a short sentence helps the pattern show.
