Teaching Edit and Repair

What it is

Editing is reading back what has been written and fixing what is wrong: a missing capital, a missing end mark, a word left out, a word spelled two different ways on one page. It is done to a finished sentence, not while the sentence is being composed.

When a child is ready

Teach it once the child writes sentences independently and already knows the rules being checked.

If they struggle

Give one thing to hunt at a time: read once for capitals, once for end marks, once for missing words. Reading aloud slowly while touching each word catches the words the eye supplies silently. Do not mark everything at once, since two corrections learned are worth more than ten pointed out.
