Teaching Patterns and Early Algebra
What it is
A pattern is a unit that repeats: red, blue, red, blue, or circle, circle, square. The child finds the part that repeats, says it aloud, and carries it on.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child can sort objects by one thing, such as color or shape, and copy a short row.
If they struggle
Say the pattern out loud while pointing at it, because the ear catches a repeat before the eye does. If the child cannot continue a row, have them copy it first, then build the same pattern out of different objects, which shows that the pattern is the order and not the things. Drawing a loop around the repeating part makes it visible.
